Team USA basketball has the best facilities in the world, the best resources in the world, and the best coaches in the world and yet we still struggle to be the best team in the world.
Beating Angola by 55 points is like the varsity beating the junior varisty in a scrimmage. It doesn’t really say much. However, teams like Brazil and Argentina that have 4 NBA players max, of which 1 is an All-Star and the rest are riding the pine or on 10 day contracts, produce nail-biting competition with the Americans.
There is one thing that the international teams have on the Americans. They have been playing with each other for a majority of their young adult lives. Whereas, most of the American players have been playing against each other. It just goes to show that sometimes when you have team chemistry and a common goal of winning for your country, that a less talented but cohesive team can beat a talented and selfish team even on their best day.
Coach Kryzewski and USA Basketball do have the right idea by taking players who are young and easily pliable to become the Team USA of the future. That way they have a few years of playing with each other under their belts and don’t come together to play in a 3 week long All-Star game, called the Olympics.
